Abstract

<PICT:0469518/IV/1> In the preparation of lead and tin alkyls by interaction of an alloy of the metal with an alkyl halide at elevated temperature and pressure, the reaction mass is maintained at the desired temperature by condensing the vapours of alkyl halide evolved during the process and returning them from the reservoir in which they are collected to the reaction vessel at a controlled rate. The alkyl halide vapours may be condensed under controlled conditions, e.g. by varying the flow of cooling medium through the condenser by means of a pressure-operated valve responsive to the pressure in the system. The condenser tubes are preferably fitted with volume restrictors in order that the vapours may pass through at a velocity above that producing turbulence and thereby prevent any building-up of pressure by the non-condensible gases formed. The process may then be operated using an excess of only 50--100 per cent of alkyl halide. For the production of lead tetra-alkyl in the apparatus described in Fig. 1, lead mono-sodium alloy and some ethyl chloride vapour are placed in the autoclave 1, which is connected in a closed system with a condenser 2 and a reservoir 3. The reaction, which is exothermic, starts spontaneously and as the temperature rises, fresh ethyl chloride is allowed to flow by gravity from the reservoir into the autoclave, the rate of feed being indicated on the dial 17a. Ethyl chloride which vaporizes is condensed and returned via the condenser to the autoclave at a rate adjusted by the valve 6a to maintain the temperature at 60--70 DEG C. Automatic control of the pressure in the system is attained by the use of a pressure-type diaphragm-operated valve 12 which determines the amount of cooling medium, preferably kerosene, entering the condenser and leaving by pipe 13. Each condenser tube 9, Fig. 2, is provided with a tube 10, hanging therein from a cross-pin 11, which acts as a volume restrictor. To assist in the regulation of the temperature the autoclave is provided with a jacket 14 through which a cooling medium such as water can flow; when the pressure drops in the system, hot water is passed through the jacket to ensure completion of the reaction.
