Abstract

1292426 Desulphurizing mineral oils E MUNEKATA 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 1970 28 May 1970] 21886/71 Heading C5E The sulphur contents of mineral oils are reduced by extraction with superheated water at above 100‹ C. The difference in specific gravity between the oil and the aqueous liquor can be adjusted so that adequate counter-current flow is obtained, e.g. by the addition of solutes and/or colloidal substances to the water, e.g. salt or a mixture of iron sulphate and iron hydroxide, or by blending the oil feed with lighter or heavier oils (after the extraction the blended oil is separated by distillation). An oil feed 11, e.g. vacuum distilled gas oil (650-1000‹ F.) is pressurized at 8, heated in heat exchanger 7 and in heater 6 and passed into the tower 1 at 3; the water is passed into the tower at 2. The water withdrawn at 4 and the treated oil withdrawn at 5 are cooled in the heat exchanger 7 and passed to the tanks 12 and 13 via the pressure energy recovering apparatus, e.g. turbines, installed in the pumps 8 and 9. As the water is cooled at 7 the sulphur compounds extracted from the oil separate to form a separate phase in the receiving tank 12. The extraction is suitably carried out at 100-350‹ C. in a tower which is either packed or comprises a number of agitated stages.
