Abstract

A grease composition consists essentially of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a mixture (A) of alkaline earth metal soaps and salts therewith, the alkaline earth metals being calcium or a mixture (B) of calcium and barium, not more than 15% of barium on a chemical equivalent basis being associated in said mixture (B) with calcium in the said soaps and salts, the mixture (A) of said soaps and salts being present in a grease forming quantity, and the metal salts of said mixture (A) being salts of a low molecular weight unsubstituted saturated monocarboxylic acid (I) having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms per molecule, and the metals soaps of said mixture (A) being soaps of a mixture of different acids as shown in the following tabulation. ...No. of.Weight ...carbon.per cent of ...atoms..total acids ..Acid... .(I).Low molecular weight.1-6.10-50 .(II).Intermediate molecular weight.7-12.5-50 .(III).High molecular weight.at least 13.5-40 .(IV).Oil acids.8-18.25-60 said acid (II) being an unsubstituted, monohydroxy - substitute or methyl - substituted saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, said acid (III) being an unsubstituted or monohydroxy-substituted saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or mono-unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid; and said oil acids being nut oil acids comprising mixtures of acids containing from about 8 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule and predominating in C12-C14 acids. The compositions of the invention are distinguished from the prior art as exemplified by Specification 810,704 in that a lead compound and an extreme pressure agent are not included. The nut oils acids may be coconut oil, palm kernel oil, or babassu kernel oil acids. The base oil may be a mineral oil, for example a blend of a solven refined naphthenic oil and a naphthenic bright stock; or a synthetic oil such as the ester of a dibasic acid or esters of polyalcohols and monocarboxylic acids such as polyethylene glycol di(2-ethyl-hexoate). Optional additives mentioned include 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methyl phenol, phenothiazine, diphenyl p-phenylene diamine, hexyl gallate, 4-tert-butyl catechol, phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, 2,4-di-tert - butyl - p - cresol, tri - tert - amyl phenyl phosphite and dicyclohexylamine, a mixture of mono and diheptyldiphenylamines and polymerized trimethyl dihydroquinoline.
