Aluminium wire 138 in an evacuable chamber 126 is fed from a motor-driven spool 134 through a guide 139 to be evaporated on to an article 133 by a resiliently mounted resistance heating element 111 (see Division H5) of titanium carbide or zirconium boride. In an alternative arrangement, the heating element 111 is <PICT:0954397/C3/1> in the form of a container for the material to be evaporated.
