Abstract
Polyesterurethane lacquers are made by reacting an oil or fatty acid modified polyester having an average of at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule of polyester with at least one mol of a diisocyanate per mol of polyester and 0.5 to 1.2 mol of a monofunctional isocyanate blocking agent which contains an enolisable keto group per mol of diisocyanate until the reaction mixture contains substantially no free isocyanate groups. The polyester may be further modified by the addition of a cyclic carboxylic anhydride before reaction with the diisocyanate. The lacquers may contain solvents such as xylene, white spirit and butarol and siccatines such as cobalt, lead and manganese naphthenates. When a siccatine is added the lacquer is stabilized by the addition of a volatile oxime such as acetoxime. The mono-functional blocking agents specified are acetylacetone and acetoacetic ester. In examples toluylene diisocyanate and acetoacetic ester are reacted with fatty acid modified polyesters prepared from (1) soya bean oil acid, castor oil, pentaerythritol and isophthalic acid (2) tall oil acid, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, isophthalic acid and maleic anhydride and (3) tall oil acid, pentaerythritol, trimethylolpropane, isophethallic acid and succinic anhydride. The products of Examples 1 and 2 are thermoset. That of Example 3 is made air-drying by the addition of cobalt naphthenate and acetoxine.
