Abstract

954,054. Transferring designs. DENNISON MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. June 21, 1960 [Jan. 8, 1960], No. 21747/60. Heading B6C. [Also in Division B8] Relates to labelling machines of the kind described in Specification 937,071 in which labels are carried on a heat-transfer label strip S, Fig. 3, fed from a feed roll 3 to a take-up roll 2 via two rolls 8, 9 mounted on a carriage 11 which is reciprocated back and forth to synchronize the speed of the portion of the strip S between the rolls 8, 9 with the speed of the heated rotary applicator A and the surface speed of the bottles B while they are being labelled. According to the invention the bottles are fed by conveyer belts 17, 18 to and from a rotary turret 16 having recesses for receiving the bottles, the bottles at the turret 16 being supported by a table 41, Fig. 8, having an opening 42 in which is located a rotor 49 on to which the bottles are pushed by rotation of the turret. The arrangement is such that at an indexing station I, Fig. 3, the bottles are rotated by the rotor 49 to present a predetermined portion of the bottle to the applicator A for reception of the label. In another opening 43, Fig. 5, in the table 41 is located another turntable 44 adapted to rotate the bottles during labelling at the same rate of rotation as the applicator A and at the speed of the label strip S. At the indexing station a head 52, Fig. 8, is pressed down against the top of the bottle B by means of a plunger 53 depressed by a spring in an air cylinder 54 controlled by a valve 56 operated by a cam so that the head is raised by air pressure during each advance of the turret and depressed by the spring during each pause of the turret. Slidably mounted on the head 52 is a spring-urged stop 57 positioned to engage the thread on the bottle neck. Thus, on depression of the head 52, the stop 57 rides down along the thread until its leading side engages the end of the thread, whereupon the rotating bottle is stopped in the desired angular position and is held in this position by means of a spring- pressed dog 62, Fig. 3, mounted on the turret 16. In labelling collapsible bottles, the bottles are inflated at the labelling station by means of an air nozzle 62, Fig. 5.
