Abstract

953,833. Pipes and tubes. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE, DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. Dec. 28, 1962 [Dec. 29, 1961], No. 48915/62. Heading F2P. A flexible tube which is capable of withstanding pressure differences and tensile forces without substantial deformation comprises a hollow core 1 of pliable material, such as neoprene, and at least one reinforcement formed by two layers of helically-wound metal wires 5 and 6, oppositely wound with respect to each other and directly superposed so that one may slide freely on the other. There may be two pairs of helically-wound wire layers which are inclined in opposite senses to the tube's axis, one by amounts between 45 and 90 degrees (preferably between 50 and 60 degrees) to bear internal pressure and a second external to the first and inclined by amounts between 15 and 35 degrees to the axis to bear the internal pressure. In general, each of the oppositely wound layers should subtend an angle α with the axes of the tube such that: R is the radius of the helix in centimetres, e the thickness between the inside of the tube core and the outer helical layer in centimetres, P the internal pressure in Kgms./cm.<SP>2</SP> and T the tensile force on the tube in Kgs. Tubes thus constructed may be used as drill-strings or for undersea pipe lines. The tube may include a layer of electrical conductors 3 between insulating layers 2 and 4 or (Fig. 2, not shown) a proportion of the wires in the outer helical layers may be insulated conducting cables slightly smaller than the reinforcing wires (8 and 9 of Fig. 1); single spring steel reinforcement may be used as at 22 of Fig. 3. The whole is enclosed in a protective outer sheath as at 11 or 26.
