Abstract

953,608. Fuel cells. UNION CARBIDECORPORATION. Dec. 22, 1961 [Jan. 11, 1961], No. 46098/61. Heading H1B. An electrode of nickel (20-80% porous) contains a catalyst of a " noble " metal and has a surface coating of finely dispersed crystals of an electrolyte repellant material having a molecular weight in excess of 10,000 being polyethylenes or natural or synthetic waxes with a melting-point above the operating temperature of the electrode. The coating is preferably applied by hot-dipping. Anodes are formed by impregnating with a formate in solution and then thermally decomposing it. Cathodes are formed by impregnation with silver acetate and/or nickel formate dissolved in ammonia and in polyhydric alcohols, subsequent heating forming the metal.
