Abstract

In a method of producing a noble metal layer on a non-metallic, electrically conductive, hydrophilic or at least superficially hydrophilized support in which the support is activated by successive treatment with an aqueous solution of an agent capable of reacting with a mercurous compound in the presence of moisture to liberate mercury and with an aqueous solution of a mercurous compound, in that order or in reverse order, and the activated surface then treated with a solution of a noble metal compound in the presence of a reducing agent for said compound to produce a noble metal layer, the mercurous compound solution also contains a silver compound and/or the noble metal compound solution contains an ionic surface-active compound with or without a non-ionic surface-active compound. The support may be of gelatin, regenerated cellulose, paper, wood, polyvinyl alcohol, chlorosulphonic-acid-treated polystyrene and polyacrylate, saponified cellulose esters, polyvinyl acetate and polyvinyl chloride, and silica-gel-coated glass. Mercury may be liberated by the action on mercurous nitrate (optionally with silver nitrate) of sodium carbonate, thiosulphate or sulphite, potassium thiocyanate, potassium cyanide, thiourea, allyl thiourea, sodium nitrite, potassium iodide, or stannous borofluoride. The noble metal layer may be deposited from solutions containing silver nitrate together with such ingredients as citric acid and lactic acid, and hydroquinone and pyrogallol. The surface active compounds are exemplified by various proprietary products. The layer, which may be continuous or a pattern, e.g. for a printed circuit or a radio station-name dial, may be after-treated, e.g. by over-coating. Specification 953,432 is referred to.
