Abstract

953,394. Semi-conductor controlled-rectifier switching circuits. ROTAX Ltd. March 26, 1962 [April 17, 1961], No. 13696/61. Heading H3T. In a circuit in which two semi-conductor controlled rectifiers 3, 4 each in series with a respective load 6, 7 are connected with appropriate polarity between the positive and negative terminals 1, 2 of a supply source and a commutating capacitor 5 is connected between the junction points of each controlled rectifier with its corresponding load so that effectively bistable operation may be achieved by the application in alternation of triggering pulses, derived for example from multivibrator 10, to the gate electrodes of the two controlled rectifiers, switching of one controlled rectifier to its conducting state resulting in the transmission via the capacitor 5 of a pulse switching the other transistor off, the series combination of a third semi-conductor controlled rectifier 8 and a load 9 is connected in parallel with one of the previously-mentioned loads 6, means being provided which when the controlled rectifier 3 in series with the controlled rectifier 8 and load 9 commence conducting is effective to trigger the controlled rectifier 8 after a variable delay. In the circuit shown, such means is constituted by a pulse generator 11 of variable mark-space ratio. By this means the time for which current flows through the load 9, which may be the field winding of a generator, may be varied between zero and a maximum equal to the period for which controlled rectifier 3 conducts although the period for which current flows through load 6 cannot be reduced below a predetermined minimum value. The loads may alternatively be connected in the anode circuits of the controlled rectifiers with the capacitor 5 connected between the anodes.
