In a device for measuring the transverse inclination of railway tracks and the like, in which a pendulum 15 moves adjacent a scale 13<SP>1</SP>, a frame 13 supporting the pendulum and scale is pivoted at 5 to a chassis, running on the rails 12, and also has feelers 11 which bear on the top surfaces of the rails 12. The device is particularly for use on a long chassis, such as that of a lifting, pinning and levelling machine or a track-packing machine where inaccuracy may occur due to the chassis taking up a skew position. As shown the two side members 1 of a track-packing machine, which includes vertically adjustable tool carriers 2, are connected by a transverse bearer 3 forming the support 4 for the pivot 5. A cylinder 6,which is pivoted at 5,forms the lower part of the frame 13, and receives a piston 7 connected by rod 8 and member 9 to a two-armed support 10 carrying the feelers 11 which are in the form of rollers. On admitting pressure medium through pipe 6<SP>1</SP> to cylinder 6,the rollers 11 are pressed firmly against the rails 12. Movement of the pendulum is damped by pistons 19 movable in cylinders 20 and provided with relief passages 19<SP>1</SP>. To move the chassis to another location, pressure medium is admitted through pipe 6" to cylinder 6 so as to raise rollers 11, and support 10 is then rotated in a horizontal plane until it is parallel to the rails 12.
