Abstract

A machine, for pulling-over and lasting shoe uppers and having toe wipers, a toe presser and a heel abutment, is provided with a plurality of hydraulically-operated pincers mounted on a turntable rotatable with respect to shoe supporting means. The pincers, Fig. 15, comprise toe pincers, two side and two ball pincers. The upper jaw 115, Fig. 6, of the toe pincers is mounted on a cylinder member 108 and the lower jaw 114 on a piston 112. Cylinder 108 houses a double piston 109, 110 and single pistons 112. A plunger 127 and spring 128 hold cylinder 108 against an abutment 105, the position of jaw 114 being adjustable by screw 117. Admission of oil through a bore 141 causes cylinder 108 to drop to close jaws 114, 115. Admission of oil through a bore 198 presses cylinder 108 and jaws 114, 115 downwardly with a force determined by an adjustable valve. Cylinder 108 abuts a pin 107 when the pincer is at a suitable level for the toe wipers to operate. The pulling force may be increased by manual means 121-126. The toe pincer is rigidly mounted on turntable plate 81. The side pincers are each screwed to plate 81 by a rapid-clamping device 153, 154, Fig. 10, to facilitate their positioning relative to the shoe support. The upper jaw 178 of each side pincer is pivotally mounted, and the lower jaw rigidly mounted, on an extension 168 of a cylinder member 167. Cylinder 167, housing piston 175, is joined by a dovetail connection to a cylinder 157 which houses a double piston 162, 164. Cylinder 167 is urged upwardly by a plunger 171 and spring 172, its upward movement being limited by the abutment of a bracket 170 against a verticallyadjustable sleeve 166. Piston 175 closes pincer 178 when oil enters through a bore 174. Admission of oil through a bore 158 operates piston 162 to pull down the side portions of the upper. Piston 162 abuts sleeve 166 at a position suitable for operation of the wipers, levers 181-188 serving to transmit manual pressure, as in the toe pincer. If the upper is pulled down too far it may be released to the required extent by means of pressure-reducing valves incorporated in the supply conduits. The ball pincers are similar to the side pincers and are rotatably mounted on plate 81 by pins locatable in a number of holes in the plate. The wipers are pivotally mounted on a wiper head 203, Fig. 2, and are swung inwardly by the action of a piston 215 acting through a yoke 213 and adjustable links. The inwiping movement is terminated by the abutment of a set screw against a member 204, further movement of piston 215 then causing member 204 and the wiper assembly to move forwards. The operating cycle of the machine is controlled by a ratchet-mounted treadle 13, Fig. 2, the upper first being positioned and pulled forward by conventional toe grippers. The edge of the upper is placed in the pincers which are then closed and moved downwardly. A pivot arm 253 is then swung over by a piston 255 and a draw bar 260 operated downwardly to bring a presser foot 263 into engagement with the upper. The ball pincers are then pivoted by pistons 91, Fig. 15, and the wiping operation effected. At the end of the wiping operation yoke 213, Fig. 2 engages a switch to cause the pincers to release the upper. At the same time a toggle lever 57 is pressed out of its vertical position by a piston to lower the shoe support so that the shoe is pressed against the wipers by pressure foot 263. A hydraulic system for operating the machine is described.
