Abstract
952,877. Continuous mixing appliances. R. HAGEN, [trading as KAUTEX-WERKE REINOLD HAGEN]. June 30, 1960 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 23006/60. Heading B1C. [Also in Division B5] A worm or screw press for plasticizing and extruding plastic material, more especially thermoplastic synthetic plastics, comprises a housing having inlet and outlet openings and in which a worm is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis, the housing and the worm tapering conically over the whole or parts of their length and being displaceable backwards and forwards relatively to one another, for the purpose of regulating the throughput capacity of the press, and the worm, over its entire length or parts thereof, having opposite threads in addition to the normal threads acting in the intended conveying direction. The worm is tapered conically in the same direction as the housing, either in the conveying direction or in the opposite direction, and has the same conicity as the housing or else is tapered to a smaller degree. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the housing 11 tapers conically from the inlet 18 to the outlet 21 except for the portion 25 immediately in front of the outlet 21 which is cylindrical. The worm 24 tapers in a similar manner and on its cylindrical portion has a thread 27 acting opposite to the conveying direction 20 in addition to a thread 26 acting in the conveying direction. Whereas the thread 26 is single-start on the conically-tapering portion of the worm 24, it is three-start on the cylindrical portion, as is thread 27, the two threads having the same pitch on this cylindrical portion. The thread 27 is milled in the core of the worm remaining after the thread 26 has been cut. The worm 24 is displaceable axially relative to the housing 11 to vary the gap between the two. The intersections of the oppositely-directed threads 26, 27 result in a number of continuous grooves extending longitudinally of the worm which promote an accelerated transport of the material while efficient kneading and mixing is simultaneously effected by the oppositely-directed threads.
