Abstract

952,823. Control of A.C. motors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. April 18, 1962 [April 20, 1961], No. 15070/62. Heading H2J. [Also in Division G4] Data which is received at a randomly-varying rate is entered into a buffer store from which it is transferred to a record medium such as a magnetic tape driven by a motor whose speed is adjusted to correspond to the rate at which the data is received. A D.C. signal is derived to represent the amount of data remaining in the buffer store and is applied at TA, Fig. 5, multivibrator MV1 producing pulses at a frequency proportional to the magnitude of the signal and a counter and diode matrix C produce output waveforms b, c, d, e which are supplied in pairs to the windings E1, E2 of a two-phase A.C. motor driving the tape. The resultant waveforms applied to the windings E1, E2 are as shown at f, g of Fig. 6 and are 90 degrees out of phase with each other. As the amount of data in the store is reduced, the motor speed is correspondingly reduced, but the minimum speed is determined by diode DI. If the store becomes empty, a pulse is applied at MA to close gate P, whereupon the counter in C is stopped, and the steady voltages on leads b-e serve to brake the motor. If data, which was previously being received at a high rate, suddenly stops arriving, a signal on lead TF stops MVI and starts MV2, whereupon circuit CS2 operates reversing switch 1NV and the signal applied to winding E2 is reversed in phase to produce an extra braking effect, the initial conditions being resumed as soon as the data input rate and the motor speed are equivalent.
