Abstract

952,558. Fuelling reactors. ELECTRICITE DE FRANCE SERVICE NATIONAL. Sept. 4, 1962 [Sept. 6, 1961], No. 33896/62. Heading G6C. To achieve more uniform burn-up of fuel elements disposed in vertical channels of a gas-cooled reactor, during a refuelling operation by a handling device (not shown) the spent fuel elements are replaced by new elements whereas partly-used fuel elements are moved to different positions within the channels, a storage facility permitting temporary storage of the partly-used elements and of closure and reflector blocks disposed in the upper ends of the channels whereby the rate of refuelling is improved. As shown, six fuel channels A... F are refuelled through a single standpipe, a central channel CC providing a temporary storage facility. In the drawings spent fuel elements U are denoted by dotted areas, partly-used elements ¢U by oblique shading and new fuel elements N by vertical shading. The initial cycle, Fig. 2, comprises: (a) the unloading of spent fuel elements U from channel A, (b) the placing of the partly-used elements ¢U from the lower portion of channel A into the channel CC. The normal cycle, Fig. 3, comprises: (a) simultaneously the loading of new fuel elements N into the channel A and the unloading of spent elements U from the channel B, (b) the replacing into the upper portion of channel A of the partly-used fuel elements ¢U of this channel which were stored in the channel CC, (c) the placing of the partly-used elements ¢U from the lower portion of the channel B into the channel CC. The normal cycle is repeated for the channels B...E. The final cycle, Fig. 4, comprises: (a) the loading of new elements N into the channel F, (b) the returning into the upper portion of the channel F of the partly-used elements ¢U of this channel which have been stored in the central channel CC. Another arrangement is described with reference to Figs. 5-8 (not shown) in which eighteen channels are refuelled through a single standpipe, the storage facility not being in the reactor core but in the handling device. In this arrangement the channels have closure and reflector blocks and in a normal cycle the partly-used elements ¢U are transferred directly from the lower portion of one channel into the upper portion of an adjacent channel without entering the storage facility.
