The apparatus of Specification 858,609 is modified by making backwash pipe 40 of non - uniform crosssection: thus, the downwardly-extending portion 45 has an internal cross - sectional area equal to from 0À2 to 0.4% of the horizontal cross-sectional area of the filter compartment, and the upwardlyextending portion 42 has an internal crosssectional area at least 40% greater than that of the downwardlyextending portion. This construction reduces the "backwash - initiating" period, which extends from the occurrence of the first flow through ejector 60 to the time when backwash pipe 40 fills up and begins to act as a siphon. Deflector 70 and pipe 71 of the earlier Specification are dispensed with.
