Abstract

An oral preparation for the treatment of primary an mia is obtained by precipitating Vitamin B12, combined with liver active substances, from an aqueous extract of animal liver by adding thereto ammonium sulphate, extracting the precipitate with alcohol, concentrating at a temperature of 40 DEG C. to a concentration of 45 grams of solid per 100 mil solution, separating the sediment produced and dissolving it in hot 90% ethyl alcohol, cooling to 0 DEG C., separating impurities and removing the ethyl alcohol to recover a solid consisting of Vitamin B12 combined with liver active substances. The aqueous extract of animal liver may be prepared using aqueous potassium cyanide or 30% ethanol as extraction solvent. The solid Vitamin B12 combined with liver active substances, is then mixed with intrinsic factor, which may be prepared according to the method of Specification 951,984, with or without the further addition of vitamins of B complex group, and may be made up into tablets.
