Abstract

A method of making a non-cellular polyurethane comprises reacting an organic compound having, as its sole reacting groups, a plurality of isocyanate groups with an organic compound having, as its sole reacting groups, a plurality of hydroxyl groups in the presence of a chelate having the general formula: <FORM:0951949/C3/1> where R and R1 are unreactive monovalent organic radicals, M is a metal radical having a co-ordination number equal to twice its electrovalence and n is a number corresponding to the electrovalence of M, said reaction being carried out in a non-basic environment in the essential absence of water, Many polyols and polyisocyanates are specified. The reaction mixtures can also contain cross-linking agents e.g. glycerol, trimethylol propane and tris(hydroxymethyl) nitromethane and plasticizers e.g. 4-nitrazapentanonitrile and 2:2-dinitropropyl -4- nitrazapentanoate and oxidisers e.g. ammonium nitrate and ammonium perchlorate may be mixed with the polyurethanes. In the examples, polyurethanes are made by reacting (ii) to (vi) 3:3 dinitro-1:5-pentane diisocyanate and 2-nitro-2-methyl-1:3 propanediol, (viii) 2-nitraza-1:4-butane diisocyanate and 2-nitro-2-methyl-1:3-propanediol; (x), (xi) and (xii) 3-nitraza-1:5-pentane diisocyanate and 2-nitro-2-methyl-1:3-propanediol; (xiii) 3-nitraza-1:5-pentane diisocyanate, tris-(hydroxymethyl) nitro methane, 4-nitrazapentanonitrile and 2:2-dinitro-1:3-propane diol; (xiv) 3-nitraza-1:5-pentane diisocyanate, polyglycidyl nitrate and 2:2-dinitropropyl -4- nitrazapentanoate; and (xv) 2:1-toluene diisocyanate, polypropylene glycol and trimethyl propane. The catalysts exemplified are: (iii) chromium acetyl acetonate, (iv) vanadyl acetyl acetonate; (vi), (viii), (x), (xiii), (xiv) and (xv) ferric acetyl acetonate; (xi) beryllium acetyl acetonate, cerrous acetyl acetonate, zirconium acetyl acetonate, ferric acetyl acetonate, aluminium acetyl acetonate, palladous acetyl acetonate and thorium acetyl acetonate and (xii) bis(dibenzoyl methane) Cu (ii), bis (ethyl acetoacetate) Cu (ii) and tris (dibenzoyl methane) Fe (iii).
