Abstract
Acetylene is recovered from pyrolysis gases by first removing carbon, tars, aromatic hydrocarbons and higher acetylenes and then dissolving the acetylene in water containing an anti-freeze at below - 20 DEG C. and under pressure. The pre-purification is preferably effected as described in Specifications 758,864 and 870,737. Suitable anti-freeze materials are dimethylformamide, methanol, ethylene glycol and glycerol, but preferred is ammonia, the solution preferably containing about 30% by weight of ammonia. Extraction may be effected at -50 DEG to -100 DEG C. at above 10 atmospheres. Acetylene is recovered by degassing, preferably in two stages to remove less soluble gases first, by decompression and warming, e.g. to 1.2 atmospheres and -10 DEG C.
