Abstract

A fire resistant functional fluid finding application as a lubricant, heat transfer agent, quenching medium, or a power transmission fluid, consists of one or more liquid triaryl phosphates each containing at least 19C per P and having a viscosity of 80-550 SUS at 100 DEG F., mixed with up to 15% of polystyrene of molecular weight 10,000 to 100,000. The preferred phosphate is the tertiary phosphate ester of cresylic acid. Small amounts of a rust inhibitor (barium petroleum sulphonate), an anti-wear additive (ditallyl hydrogen phosphate) and an anti-foam agent (a polysiloxane), also may be present. The fluids may be used in hydraulic systems, piston-type pumps, and air compressors (e.g. in the hydraulic systems of die casting systems, metal presses, forging presses and high temperature furnaces).ALSO:A fire-resistant functional fluid finding application as a lubricant, heat transfer agent, quenching medium or a power transmission fluid, consists of one or more liquid triaryl phosphates each containing at least 19C per P and having a viscosity of 80-550 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F., mixed with up to 15% of polystyrene of molecular weight 10,000 to 100,000.
