Abstract

951,357. Producing spherical drops. F. W. A. KURZ, and S. WIKNE. April 6, 1962 [April 6, 1961; March 16, 1962], No. 13408/62. Heading B5A. Spherical drops, to be used for producing the pores in lightweight concrete, consist of an aqueous gel and are preformed in air or gas and introduced into a bath of material causing the gel to harden to form spherical beads containing a mixture of air and water. The gel forming substance can be an alginic acid or salt, carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose; hydroxyethylcellulose, viscose, agar, caseinates bone glue, starch and gums. The hardening bath may be an aqueous solution of a calcium salt, alum, sulphuric acid, borax or lead acetate or glyoxal. The drops can be introduced into the gas by centrifugation, extrusion or spraying or by falling through orifices in a container, the outlets of the various containers having shapes such as to aid in the production of spherical drops. The beads can be washed with water to remove impurities which may stop the beads from assuming a spherical shape. The beads should be allowed to become spherical before reaching the hardening bath by means described above, by increasing the time taken to reach the hardening bath or by using chemical agents to accelerate the action of the surface tension.
