Abstract
<FORM:0951090/C3/1> <FORM:0951090/C3/2> <FORM:0951090/C3/3> A method of modifying the interior walls of a container made of synthetic or natural resin or rubber to render the walls receptive to a coating, comprises the steps of introducing into and filling the container with a heavier-than-air explosive mixture of gases in predetermined proportions such that oxygen is present with the products of combustion, the gases being introduced into the upright container only adjacent the bottom of the container to purge air upwardly, and then igniting the explosive mixture within the container to oxidize the interior walls and make them adherent to a coating. The invention is an improvement on the method disclosed in Specification 834,263 and specifies containers (such as bottles) made of natural or synthetic rubber, polystyrene, olefin and diolefin polymers and, in particular, of polyethylene or nylon. The explosive mixture is suitably a mixture of propane, ethane, natural gas, gasoline or kerosine with oxygen, and the modified walls obtained may be spray coated and then heated to cure or harden the coating. Coatings specified are obtained from solutions, dispersions or suspensions of epoxy resins, polyvinyl chloride or vinyl ester-vinyl alcohol copolymers + ureaformaldehyde resins, polyacrylonitrile, nylons, acrylonitrile - styrene copolymers, polyvinyl alcohol, maleic anhydride copolymers, and pigment compositions. The invention is illustrated by reference to an apparatus of the endless conveyer type wherein in Figs. 1 and 2, A is the surface treatment station, B is the coating station comprising spray nozzles 140 and C is the curing station, and in Fig. 3, 91 is the nozzle for introducing the explosive mixture which is exploded by means of the ignition assembly 88, 94, 95, 96, 97 in the bottle D. The coated containers find application in the packaging of liquids, e.g. deodorants, hair preparations and cosmetic preparations such as skin lotions and perfumes.
