Abstract
950,532. Casting-machines. GRIFFIN WHEEL CO. Oct. 19, 1961, No. 37546/61. Heading B3F. Apparatus for stopping the flow of molten metal through a pairing tube into a mould gate comprises cut-off means operated by a power device abuttably engageable with a portion of the mould assembly and the cut-off means. The mould assembly 2, Fig. 1, is mounted on a wheeled platform 40 movable on rails 10, sections 10a of which are vertically movable by jacks 62 so that the mould may be plated on, or removed from the pouring tube leading from a molten metal container 81 which is pressurized to feed the metal to the mould. The cut-off means 12 includes an apertured slide member 22 which is actuated by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder 78 held by spring-loaded clamps in a floating support between the slide 22 and an abutment 82, Fig. 10, on the platform 40. The member 14 on which the slide 22 moves has a slot 18, Fig. 6, which allows the plug of metal carried away in the aperture of the slide to fall away. In a modification, Figs. 19, 23, a mould for making an elongated billet is made of graphite blocks clamped together. One end of the mould is supported on a trolley 158 and the other end, which comprises a graphite pouring block 152a is supported over the pouring tube 58 in a manner similar to that described above.
