A flexible mounting for an illuminating device which may be a lamp or a prism or the like co operating with a fixed light source, comprises a receptacle having an upstanding circular wall for embedding in a vehicle supporting way, circular holding means having a sloping surface and of substantially less diameter than the wall of the receptacle and a height of the order of the depth of the receptacle, means for retaining the illuminating device below the surface and an annular resilient diaphragm having a radial width greater than its thickness, the outer edge being securely fastened to the cylindrical wall and the inner edge to the holding means so as to support the sloping surface above the vehicle way and to permit it to recess into the receptacle under application of an external force and return on removal of the force. The casing 20 is sunk in an aircraft runway 21 and has a threaded ring 37 to which is bonded a ring 31 of rubber, the inner edge of which is secured to a conical member 30 having a transverse channel with a sloping bottom 33 and flaring side walls 34, 35. A light source 28 is carried in resilient mountings 46, 47 so as to extend across the channel below the level of the top of the member 30 and is protected by a strap 57. The underside of the member 30 carries a rubber ring 58 to act as a buffer when the member is recessed into the casing and may also be provided with rigid stops (not shown). The casing may be sealed so as to be air and water tight, the compression of the air when the member is depressed assisting the buffering action. In a modification, to enable the member 30 to be removed the ring 31 may be bonded to an outer ring which is secured by bolts to a flange on the inner side of the casing. The light source may be an iodine lamp.
