Abstract
949,972. Blow-moulding hollow articles. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. July 15, 1960, No. 24716/60. Heading B5A. A tube 3 of e.g. polythene is extruded from a head 1 between mould sections 4a, 46 mounted on a rotary turret, the mould sections are closed to pinch the lower edge of the tube, and grip the upper part of the tube by a bore 12, the extruded tube is then cut by a knife 15 from the head 1, and the moulds moved to another station where a blow head 16 is moved into engagement with the mould. A blowing mandrel 6 is moved, either concurrently or subsequently to the movement of the blow head, into the tube 3. Members 11a 11b are then moved together, preferably before air is introduced into the tube, to mould the neck portion of the tube. The members 11a, 11b may have a cutting edge 21 which engages the mandrel 6. The tube is then blown to the shape of the mould. Excess material 19 may be removed by a blast of air after retraction of the mandrel. In a modification, Fig. 5a, the members 11a 11b may be integral with the mould parts 4a, 4b and the mandrel 6 may have a shoulder 6a which co-operates with the parts 11a 11b to shear off excess material 19. Specification 564,350 is referred to.
