Abstract

An alkylbenzene containing a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl group of 12-13 carbon atoms, with or without one or more primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl groups of 2-6 carbon atoms, is chlorinated at 100-220 DEG C. under the influence of artificial light or ultra-violet radiation until the product contains 5-50% by weight of chlorine. Examples are given of the chlorination of dodecylbenzene to yield products containing, respectively, 19-20 and 30.5% of chlorine, the chlorination in the second example being effected in stages at successively increasing temperatures. The products are useful as additives for mineral lubricating oils.ALSO:An alkylbenzene containing a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl group of 12-13 carbon atoms, with or without one or more primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl groups of 2-6 carbon atoms, is chlorinated at 100-220 DEG C. under the influence of artificial light or ultra-violet radiation until the product contains 5-50% by weight of chlorine.
