Abstract
Surgical dressing material comprises comminuted egg-shell membrane the total surface area of which is greater than that of the weight of egg-shell membrane. Egg-shell membranes are separated from cooked or uncooked egg-shells mechanically or chemically and are disintegrated in a homogenizer or blender in air or a non-softening liquid to form non-fibrous particles or in a softening liquid or gas to form fibres having a diameter of the order of 4-7 microns. Softening liquids used are water-free methyl ethyl ketone, 1 : 4-dioxane, benthiazol, pyridine, pentane-diane or chloroform. Softening agents are water, steam, aqueous solutions, methyl alcohol, glacial acetic acid, mercapto-acetic acid, molten phenol crystals, formamide, propionic acid, beta-mercapto-propionic acid, lactic acid, anhydrous pyridine, chlorophenols or cresols. The membrane fibres or particles are separated from the suspending liquid by filtration, centrifuging, evaporation &c. which is repeated after washing. Any aggregates of fibres or particles so formed are separated in a homogenizer, there being no suspending liquid. The resulting powder or fibrous mass is applied to the wound directly or to a paper, fabric or synthetic plastic backing to which it is made to adhere by compositions including pectin, gelatin, starch or starch derivatives, vegetable gums or synthetic resinous polyamine substances. Fibrous membrane particles may be felted together with a proportion of natural or synthetic fibres or during the felting operation a layer of natural or synthetic fibres may be deposited on a layer of egg-shell membrane fibres. The fibres or powder may be partially digested with ensymes, e.g. papain, ficin, pepsin, trypsin, bromelin &c. or reduced or oxidized by hydrogen peroxide, urea peroxide, peracetic acid, performic acid mercapto-acetic acid, mercapto-propionic acid or substances with a thiol group and their soluble salts. The fibre or powder may be sterilized or combined with drugs, antibiotics or bacteriostatic agents, e.g. neomycin, bacitracin, tetracyclines, chloramphericol or "sulfa" drugs.
