Abstract

A synthetic leather-like fabric is formed by impregnating a woven or non-woven fabric with a natural rubber, synthetic rubber or synthetic resin composition which contains a blowing agent and heating the impregnated fabric to cause the composition to foam and to expand the fabric. The fabric may be a random lay or non-random lay non-woven fabric, a knitted or woven fabric or a woven or pressed felt. Preferably a random lay non-woven fabric comprising nylon and rayon fibres is bonded with a plasticized polyvinyl chloride paste containing the blowing agent which may produce carbon dioxide or nitrogen on heating. Azodicarbonamide, polyurethane and other isocyanate based foams, polyethers, polycarbonates and silicones may be used as the blowing agent. The plasticizer may be butyl benzyl phthalate and dibasic lead phthalate. The fabric may be impregnated on one or both sides, preferably more than once, using a roll coater or a doctor knife or by dip coating. One surface of the fabric may be coated with a non-foamed synthetic resin which may be embossed, e.g. by a cooled engraved roller, to give a grained surface and the other surface may be sueded by brushing or abrading. Specifications 882,296 and 928,901 are referred to.ALSO:A synthetic leather-like fabric is formed by impregnating a woven or non-woven fabric with a natural rubber, synthetic rubber or synthetic resin composition which contains a "blowing agent" and heating the impregnated fabric to cause the composition to foam and to expand the fabric, a "blowing agent" being a substance which decomposes when heated to provide an inert gas to blow the rubber or resin. The fabric may be impregnated on one or both sides, preferably more than once, using a roll coater, or a doctor knife or by dip coating. One surface of the fabric may be coated with a non-foamed synthetic resin which may be embossed, e.g. by a cooled engraved steel roller, to give a grained surface and the other surface may be sueded by brushing or abrading Specifications 882,296 and 928,901 are referred to.
