Abstract
949,521. Travelling wave tubes. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Aug. 17, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 29771/61. Heading H1D. An electron discharge device, e.g. a travelling wave tube, has a cloverleaf delay line having an input and a waveguide output, the cloverleaf sections being inductively coupled to one another, the extent of the last two or more in the direction of the beam cloverleaf delay line sections decreasing progressively. The cloverleaf delay line sections are inductively coupled by sets of eight slots 29, alternate sets of slots being in alignment to give negative mutual inductive coupling between adjacent delay line sections. Screwed stubs 49, 55 serve for capacitive tuning and also assist in the impedance matching. The output waveguide 35 has a #/2 diameter coupling hole 27<SP>1</SP> to the delay line, and a #/2 reduced height part 34 broadening in two steps into the main waveguide part 35. The delay line has a central lossy section comprising annular plates 31, welded to 25. Two sets of four spaced carbonloaded ceramic discs 32 are brazed to plates 31 which have channels for cooling fluid. The collector 37 is also fluid cooled and is surrounded by an X-ray shield, and a getter pump 40 is attached. Magnetic focusing is achieved by a magnetic circuit having polepieces 13, 44 integral with the tube. The gun has a ceramic spacer 14 and aligning disc 15. The indirectly heated cathode filament is heated by pulses. The gun has a concave cathode button 19, two focusing electrodes 21 and an anode 23. Specification 847,472 is referred-to.
