Abstract

Halogen-containing synthetic resins are heat-and light-stabilized by the incorporation of 0.1 to 10% by weight of a diorganotin compound prepared by the reaction of 1 mole of a diorganotin compound with 1 mole of a monocarboxylic mercapto acid or a sodium salt thereof. Resins specified are polyvinyl chloride; copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, chlorobutadienes, acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, diethyl maleate and fumarate and maleic anhydride; copolymers of vinyl or vinylidene chloride with acrolein, crotonaldehyde, vinyl methyl ketone and ether, and vinyl isobutyl ether; polyvinylidene chloride; polymers of vinyl chloro-acetate, dichlorodivinyl ether, dichlorostyrene and chlorobutadienes; chlorinated rubber; chlorinated polymers of vinyl chloride and acetate, acrylic and alpha-substituted acrylic acid esters, ethylene, and chlorobutadienes; and the corresponding bromides and fluorides. The stabilizers may be used in conjunction with other stabilizers e.g. barium, calcium, strontium and zinc salts and compounds having one or more epoxy groups; antioxidants e.g. substituted phenols and phosphite esters; and lubricants e.g. montan wax, stearamides and polyethylenes of molecular weight about 2000. In examples reaction products of (1) dilauryl tin oxide and thiosalicylic acid; (2) diphenyl tin dimethoxide and beta-mercaptopropionic acid; (3) dioctyl tin dichloride and beta-mercaptopropionic acid; and (4) dibutyl tin dichloride and beta-mercaptopropionic acid, are incorporated in a 95:5 vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer also containing a polyethylene lubricant and dioctyl phthalate as plasticizer. Postulated formulae are given for the reaction products.
