Abstract

A heat resistant plastic composition comprises a halogen-containing resin and a heat stabilizer comprising a zinc and a potassium salt of an aromatic, cycloaliphatic or substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, or an unsubstituted saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, or of a monoester of a dicarboxylic acid wherein the ratio of zinc to potassium is from 10:1 to 10:10 and wherein 0.01 to 3% by weight of the stabilized resin composition is zinc. Halogen-containing resins mentioned are vinyl-chloride and vinylidene chloride polymers and copolymers which contain vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride in amounts from 50 to 100% of the copolymer and those copolymers mentioned in U.S.A. Specification 2,745,819. Acids mentioned are caprylic; capric; lauric; isodecanoic; 2-ethylhexoic; p-tert-butylbenzoic; cyclohexanecarboxylic acid; a -hydroxy derivatives of the above acids; ricinoleic acid; a -hydroxystearic acid and a -hydroxypalmitic acid. Mono esters mentioned are monobutylmaleate and monodecylphthalate. The salts may be either neutral or basic. Other heat and light stabilizers and conventional additives such as plasticizers and pigments may be incorporated in the resin composition. Stabilizers mentioned are epoxides, and/or alkyl substituted phenols and alkali metal and alkaline earth metal salts thereof and particularly preferred are organic phosphites, e.g. trialkyl, trialkylene, triaryl and mixed alkyl aryl phosphites and pentaerythrityl phosphites. The phosphites are employed in such amounts that 0.1 to 5% by weight of phosphorus based on the resin is used. In Example 1, a mixture of polyvinylchloride, dioctyl phthalate, epoxidized soya oil, triphenyl phosphite, alkylated phenol, stearic acid, zinc 2-ethylhexoate and potassium 2-ethylhexoate was fused and formed into a continuous film. In another example the triphenyl phosphite was replaced by didecyl phenyl phosphite. In other examples the zinc and potassium salts used were (a) zinc and potassium isodecanoate; (b) zinc and potassium laurate; (c) zinc and potassium decanoate and (d) zinc ricinoleate and potassium butyl maleate, the resins being polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride-polyvinyl acetate blends or chlorinated polyethylene. Specifications 803,081 and 803,082 are referred to.
