[Also in Division F1] In a process for the treatment of fibrous material, the material is placed in a container and is repeatedly circulated with a liquid through an oblique - rotor pump, whose inlet and outlet are connected with the container, until the degree of fineness required is obtained. A material such as rags of synthetic fibre or fabric, wood chips, waste paper, waste from the manufacture of hardboard, or cotton fibres is treated by circulating it, together with a liquid, through a tank 181, Fig. 1, by means of an inclined-disc pump 193 as described in Specification 949,461. Agitation is provided by extending the end of the delivery pipe 195 into the tank to just above an inclined floor 184. When the material has been sufficiently reduced in size, the resultant homogenized slurry is drawn off through a pipe 188 under the control of a valve 189 or, if very thick, is baled out of the tank. In a modification, five inclined-disc pumps are arranged in a semicircle about the tank, their delivery pipes discharging at a slight angle towards the apex of a conical floor of the tank. Sloping deflectors are provided below the delivery pipes. Fig. 4 shows a chemical plant in which material is circulated through an acid-resistant pressuretight vessel 198 by means of an inclined-disc pump 201. A screw conveyer 208 may be provided within the intake hopper 200 of the pump to assist in feeding pasty material into the pump. Gas, steam or other substances for admixture with the circulated material or for reaction therewith can be introduced through a branch 244. The vessel 198 may be cooled or heated. In the plant shown in Fig. 9, liquid is circulated through a boiler 230 by two inclined-disc pumps 233. The two delivery pipes 237 face each other inside the boiler so that the two streams of liquid are discharged into head-on collision to promote mixing. The boiler may be rotated by gearing 238, in which case the pipes 237 pass through stuffing boxes 240 and the suction pipe 231 is connected to the boiler through an annular branch 241.
