949, 215. Linear dimension gauges; measuring strip thickness electrically. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 25,1960 [Nov.18, 1959], No. 39093/59. Headings G1M and G1N. The thickness of moving hot strip 23 is gauged by rollers 11,12 carried on rotatable shafts 13,14 mounted in bearings in pivoted tubes 19, 20. The inner ends of the shafts 13,14 are mounted in bearings 26, 25 between which is mounted a telemetering device 24, the signals from which are transmitted to a remote indicator or recorder having a long time constant and so not responding to high frequency variations in the signals. A suitable device is stated to be an inductance type transducer coupled to a damped moving coil meter. Since the shafts 13, 14 rotate they are heated uniformly by the strip 23, but even if they do tend to buckle the periodic variations caused by this buckling have no effect on the indicator or recorder and the mean distance between the shafts is measured. In another embodiment the rollers 11 are replaced by non- rotatable feelers and the shafts are rotated directly by a motor. The motors used for this purpose may be electric or pneumatic. In the latter case, air exhausted from them may be used to keep the interior of the device at a controlled temperature. In each embodiment pneumatic means are provided to separate the feelers for insertion of the work.
