Abstract
A coating composition comprises a dispersion of 100 parts by weight of a homopolymer or co-polymer of a vinyl halide in a plasticizer of low volatility, between 2 and less than 20 parts of an epoxy resin, and a hardener for the epoxy resin which is inactive at room temperature. The vinyl halide may be co-polymerized with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, methyl methacrylate or vinyl butyl ketone. The plasticizers may be polyesters or liquid butadieneacrylonitrile copolymers. At least 50% of them should be non-volatile at the curing temperature of the compositions. They are usually employed together with a solvent, e.g. xylene, or a conventional plasticizer, e.g. butyl, octyl or decyl phthalate, or butyl or decyl sebacate. Suitable epoxy hardening agents are dicyandiamide, resoles, or etherified urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resins. The compositions are particularly useful for coating metals. In Examples, (1) polyvinyl chloride is milled with a liquid adipate of poly-propylene glycol, di-n-butyl sebacate, a liquid epoxy resin, dicyandiamide, and xylene. (2) The composition consists of polyvinyl chloride, liquid butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer, liquid epoxy resin, dicyandiamide and di-n-butyl sebacate. (3) Solid epoxy resin is dissolved in dibutyl phthalate and an adipate of polypropylene glycol. A butanol solution of butylated urea-formaldehyde condensate is added and polyvinyl chloride is milled into the mixture. The pasty compositions may be spread on metal sheets, e.g. tinplate and cured by heating-the composition of Ex.(1) at 175 DEG C. for 30 mins., of Ex.(2) at 190 DEG C. for 25 mins., and of Ex.(3) at 180 DEG C. for 30 mins.ALSO:Compositions of epoxy resin, hardener therefor, a homo- or co-polymer of a vinyl halide and a plasticizer of low volatility (see Division C3) are spread with a knife on to a clean surface of metal, e.g. tinplate sheets and cured by heating, e.g. at 175-190 DEG C. for 25 to 30 minutes.
