Abstract
Tertiary aluminium phosphate is obtained by introducing ammonia, for example in aqueous solution, into a solution containing aluminium chloride and phosphoric acid, to bring the pH of the solution to 4.2-6, the temperature being maintained below 30 DEG C., separating the resulting aluminium phosphate gel from the solution, for example by settling, filtering, or centrifuging, and expelling residual aluminium chloride from the gel by sublimation, for example by calcination below 650 DEG C., preferably 340-360 DEG C., if desired an inert gas such as nitrogen being passed through the gel to assist in the expulsion. The product may be compressed into tablets and used as a catalyst in the production of melamine. In the example, the tabletted material had a surface area of 206 m.2/g.
