Abstract

948,827. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Aug. 10, 1961 [Dec. 21, 1960], No. 43888/60. Heading H4A. [Also in Division H1] The symmetry of a circularly polarized (CP) wave is preserved by reflecting back, in suitable phase, components of the wave which are reflected by the asymmetric horn 8. In the radar system shown, a wave propagated in a square waveguide 2 with a direction of polarization indicated by vertical vector E is converted by polarizer 6 into a CP wave and radiated by rectangular-section horn 8. The asymmetry of the horn causes partial and unequal reflection of the orthogonal components of the wave with consequent loss of circularity. The horizontal component of the reflected energy is shifted in phase by the adjustable phase-shifter 4 and re-reflected towards the horn by a short-circuit 3 consisting of an array of horizontal conductors. It is stated that loss of circularity is compensated if the phaseshifter is suitably adjusted. The phase-shifter comprises a horizontal sheet of polystyrene vertically movable by means of an insulating threaded rod 5.
