Abstract

A process for protecting a jointed cable whose sheathing or insulation comprises a polyvinyl chloride composition includes the steps of (a) coating the sheathing or insulation with a primer comprising a solution in an organic solvent of a resinous component formed by copolymerization of vinyl chloride and a vinyl ester of a lower aliphatic acid in the presence of up to 10% of the total weight of resin of a modifying compound selected from maleic acid, maleic anhydride, monoesters of maleic and fumaric acids, derivatives of the foregoing compounds obtained by replacing a hydrogen atom a to the carboxyl group by an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, or aralkyl group, and crotonic acid; (b) causing or allowing the primer to dry; (c) applying a hardenable polyepoxide resinous composition around the metallic joint and the primer coated sheathing or insulation; (d) causing or allowing the polyepoxide resinous composition to harden. The epoxide resin may contain a phenol/aldehyde/amine complex as hardener, and the composition may also contain pitch, tar or bitumen. Specifications 789,475 and 868,892 are referred to.
