Abstract

Amorphous copolymers of alpha-olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbons are made by copolymerizing at least two of the hydrocarbons in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a hydrocarbonsoluble vanadium halide and a hydrocarbonsoluble alkyl aluminium dihalide. The polymerization is generally effected in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, and the catalyst components added separately and dropwise to the polymerizable medium. The vanadium halide may be vanadium tetrachloride or vanadium oxytrichloride, and the aluminium compound may be ethyl-aluminium dibromide, isobutylaluminium dichloride, hexylaluminium dichloride or 2-ethylhexylaluminium dichloride. The polymers are recovered from the polymerizate by treatment with water. Specified unsaturated hydrocarbons are ethylene, propylene, butene-(1), pentene-(1), hexene-(1), 4-methyl-pentene-(1), 5:5-dimethyl-hexene-(1), 3-methyl-pentene-(1), 3-ethyl-hexene-(1), styrene, 1:3-butadiene, isoprene, 1:4-pentadiene, and 1:5-hexadiene. The copolymers may be cross-linked or vulcanized in the presence of organic peroxides, and sulphur at 100-200 DEG C. Fillers such as carbon black and silica may also be present in the vulcanizable mix. Specification 941,665 is referred to.
