Abstract

948,047. Cutting webs. BELOIT EASTERN CORPORATION. May 30, 1962 [June 2, 1961], No. 20896/62. Heading B4B. A web-severing system comprises a support over which the web is arranged to move longitudinally, and first and second shearing members 11, 13 supported respectively on first and second carrier members 24, 27 which are disposed on opposite sides of the web and supported by first and second guide members 25, 28 for movement transversely with respect to the web, the transverse positions of both of the carrier members along the guide members being remotely controllable by a power-actuated unit. The shearing members consist of a blade 11 which is rotatably mounted on a bracket 110 depending from the carrier member 24 and a band 13 which is rotatably mounted on the carrier member 27 and driven by a motor 106, frictional engagement between the blade and band rotating the blade. The carrier member 24 is movable along the guide member 25 by a rack-and-pinion mechanism 29, 30 driven from a unit 33 and a motor 35, and the carrier member 27 is similarly movable along the guide member 28 by a rack-and-pinion mechanism 31, 32 driven from a unit 34 and a motor 36, the units 33, 34 each consisting of a pair of selectively-operable forward and reverse clutches and reduction gearing connecting the motors to the pinions and control transformers also connected to the pinions. The transformers in the units 33, 34 are connected by lines 40, 41 to respective selsyn generators in control units 42, 43 which contain amplifiers connecting the control transformers to the forward and reverse clutches of the units 33, 34. If the rotor of the selsyn generator of the control unit 42 is rotated by a knob 45, a voltage is induced in its stator and applied to the stator and rotor of the control transformer in the unit 33. The voltage in the rotor of the transformer, is fed to the amplifier, which includes a phase-sensitive circuit and the output of which is fed to one or other of the forward and reverse clutches of the unit 33 to enable the motor 35 to move the carrier member to a position corresponding to the movement of the knob 45. Similar control of the lower carrier member may be effected by rotation of a knob 46 on the unit 43. In addition, a three position switch 48 can be moved to a second position in which the movement of the lower carrier is controlled by the unit 42 and to a third position in which the lower carrier is controlled by a selsyn generator 37 on the upper carrier 24 whereby the lower carrier follows the movements of the upper carrier. When the carriers are in position, a switch 47 is operated which stops both motors 35, 36 and engages both the forward and reverse clutches of each unit 33, 34 to lock the carriers against movement. A plurality of pairs of slitter units may be used and a pair of switches 92, 93, 94, 95 are provided on the carriers of each unit to automatically disconnect the drive to a unit if it abuts another or an end stop during adjustment.
