An abrasive tool comprising abrasive granules such as diamonds, embedded in a body is dressed by applying particles of an abrasive substance to the surface of the tool while the surface of the tool and the abrasive substances are moved relatively to each other in a generally longitudinal direction and in such a manner as to allow the abrasive particles to be deviated from their path by the embedded granules and expose the latter without damaging them. The abrasive particles may be applied to the tool in a gaseous or liquid stream or they may be embedded in a hand-held or fixedly-mounted resilient body which is rotated with its periphery contacting the tool such tool being either rotated or stationary. Alternatively, the abrasive particles may be embedded in a flexible rod which is held by hand in contact with the rotating tool.
