Abstract
947,035. Beater mills. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Nov. 26, 1962, No. 44602/62. Heading B2A. A beater mill includes beater blades 10, 25 disposed in two or more coaxial rings lying side-by-side and a beater wheel 6 on which the blades are mounted and arranged to rotate about their common axis, the material being supplied to one side of the beater wheel in a general axial direction and discharged outwardly between the beater blades, partly between the blades of one ring and partly between the blades of the, or each, other ring. The wheel 6 rotates on a shaft 4 in a housing 1 having a discharge branch 3, material being delivered through an opening 2 at the lower end of a charge shoot 35 after partial reduction by beater-arms 36, 37. The wheel includes a circular rear wall 7 and two flat annuli 9, 24, annulus 9 being connected to the wall 7 by struts 8 and annulus 24 being connected to the annulus 9 by struts 23. The blades 10 in the ring nearer the wall 7 are similar to each other and have their outer edges parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel, whilst their inner edges are inclined to the axis. All the blades 25 in the other ring are also similar to each other, their outer and inner edges being parallel to the axis of rotation of the wheel. The blades 10, 25 are prevented from radially outward movement during rotation of the wheel by contact between the outer edge of the blades 10 and flanges 11, 12, formed on the disc 7 and ring 9 respectively, and between the outer edges of blades 25 and flanges 26, 27 formed on rings 9, 24 respectively. Each of the opposite side edges of blades 10, 25 is bent away from the strut supporting the blade. The edges 14, 29 of blades 10, 25 abut wear plates 19, 34, Fig. 4, extending between successive blades 10, 25, the wear plates being respectively fixed to the disc 7 and ring 9 and thus protecting one of the surfaces of each from wear. The other edges 13, 28 of the blades 10, 25 respectively abut wear plates 18, 33, which co-operate with adjacent wear plates 20, 35 to protect the surfaces of rings 9, 24 between successive blades 10, 25. The plates 18, 33 are removable so that the blade 10, 25 which it abuts may be swung around its opposite edge 14, 29 and be removed and replaced. A removable cover in the housing 1 provides access to the blades. In a modification, the blades 10 may be similar to the blades 25 and rings 9, 24 may be reinforced by spokes extending from them to the shaft 4.
