Abstract
The invention comprises a method of preventing the formation of adhering, solid deposits on a steel surface in contact with a crude maleic anhydride product super-saturated with crude maleic acid containing fumaric acid, resins and tars, by maintaining the steel surface at at least 185 DEG C. and a means for removing a solid crude maleic acid deposit from a steel surface by heating the deposit to at least 185 DEG C. and dispersing it in water maintained at about 100 DEG C. and removing the resultant aqueous dispersion. The crude maleic anhydride product may be obtained by the dehydration by azeotropic distillation with e.g. xylene, of an aqueous maleic acid solution formed by the absorbtion in water of the product of the catalytic partial oxidation of benzene from which some maleic anhydride has been removed by condensation. The deposit may be heated while submerged in a liquid which is preferably maleic anhydride. The preferred temperature is from 185 to 200 DEG C. Examples are provided. Specification 853,849 is referred to.
