Abstract

A fire-resistant acoustical tile consists of granulated mineral fibres and a binder which includes non-swelling clay material in an amount not less than 12% by weight of the mineral fibre. The granular mineral fibre is defined as mineral wool or glass wool in the form of granules or separate tufts, the size of which is such that 100% will pass through a inch mesh and 0-20% will pass through a No. 4 U.S. mesh. The nonswelling clays are kaplinite, talc, chrysotile, and ball clay. The binder may additionally include starch, boric acid, paraffin wax, and sodium hexametaphosphate. The clay is pulverised so that the particles are about 2.14 to 5.72 microns in length and width and the thickness is about 1/10th of the length or less. A mixture of clay, boric acid, starch, and sodium hexametaphosphate in water at 150 DEG F. is slowly added with stirring to a mixture of paraffin wax in water at 205 DEG F. More water is then added and the whole mixture kept heated at 185 DEG F. until the viscosity of the mixture is 1000-2000 centipoises at 170 DEG F. The binder is mixed with the mineral wool and this mixture is fed into paper lined platens and levelled with a reciprocating screed bar. The moulded slabs are air-dried and then placed in a drying oven where drying takes place in four separate zones. Details of the proportions of the various constituents used and temperatures employed in drying are given.
