In an advertising sign of the type in which light from a source is transmitted through a display screen which is at least partly lighttransmissive, the screen is formed at least partly by an opaque panel an area of which contains a multiplicity of closely spaced apertures, and on the side of the panel away from the source the boundaries of the apertures are light reflective and are inclined to the face of the panel. Figs. 1 and 2 show an advertising sign in which a sheet metal trough has the shape of letter N and houses a mounting for an elongated N shaped low pressure tubular electric discharge tube 2. A sheet 4 of translucent plastic closes the mouth of the trough and a sheet of slotted expanded aluminium, Fig. 3, (not shown) is painted on both sides with gold paint and housed behind a further N shaped sheet 7 of plastic material e.g. methyl methacrylate, the whole being sealed by strips 8 of coloured adhesive tape. The webs of metal between the apertures in the expanded metal sheet 6 are inclined to form internal and external reflectors and may form a decorative pattern as shown in Fig.4 and render the sign decorative by external light falling on it when the lamp 2 is extinguished.
