Abstract

946,393. Jointing by stamping. AMP. Inc. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 4, 1961], No. 44142/62. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B4] A hand press tool for crimping connectors to electrical conductors having a pair of press dies relatively movable in a " C " shaped tool head between the arms thereof by force-applying means in which a belt or strip feeding means having connectors arranged transversely of the strip is supported at a side of the tool head and comprises a sprocket wheel for engaging and feeding the strip rotatable about an axis normal to the head and to the line of action of the press dies, and a finger operated indexing means for rotating the sprocket wheel to feed the strip in steps towards the tool head to position connectors successively between the dies. The tool comprises a C shaped head comprising a pair of parallel spaced plates having upper and lower arms 4, 6 and a handle 10 fitted to the arm 6, a block 12 slidably mounted between the arms 6 by a pair of guide plates 14 having upper and lower slots 22, 23 which engage pins 24, 28 and which are secured to the sides of the block by pins 16, 44, and a hand lever 31, connected to the handle 10 by a ratchet device 48, pivoted on the pin 24 which also passes through side plates 30 and a cam block 26. A cam surface 29 engages a roller 34 mounted at the end of a link 38 of a toggle mechanism the other end being pivotally mounted between the extensions 6 on a pin 28, the link 38 is also pivoted at a knee joint 40 to a link 42, pivotally connected at 44 to the block 12. The link 38 is connected via a spring 46 to the handle 10 which serves to bias the toggle mechanism into the broken condition. A movable crimping die 54 is connected to a plate 50, via a bracket 52, which extends downwardly and is adjustably secured to the block 12, a screw 56 adjusts the height of the die relative to the block. The upper end of plate 50 fits a slot of a block 58, which is connected via a tie-plate 51 to a fixed die 66. A feeding mechanism adjustably mounted on a web 68 on the side of the tool comprises a toothed sprocket wheel 78 mounted on a stub shaft 76 secured to the web, a traveller plate 84 rotatable on the shaft 76 disposed within a circular recess in the wheel and a pawl 88 spring biased about a pivot 90 in a clockwise direction and positioned within a side recess 86 in the plate 84. The pawl end 92 is engageable with the sprocket teeth 80 which extend sidewardly and define the sides of the recess. A locking pawl 98 spring biased in an anti-clockwise direction into the notches of the sprocket wheel is pivotally mounted at 100 below the wheel and prevents clockwise rotation thereof. A lever 104 pivoted on the pin 100 and biased in a clockwise direction by a spring 105 connected between the pin and a pin 107 has a notch 106 which engages the pivot 90 and an arcuate recess 108 and a triangular projection 110 which co-operates with a pin 111 extending sidewardly from the bracket 52. A deflector plate is formed by a flange 112 which serves to reverse the direction of the belt through a U path and an arcuate clamping member 118 which is pivotally secured to a spring biased lever 122 to urge the belt B to the wheel. Operation.-Perforations P of the belt B, e.g. of plastic, loaded with preformed connectors T is positioned over the sprocket wheel, the lever 104 is moved in an anti-clockwise direction against spring 105 to rotate the traveller plate 84 and wheel 78 to advance a connector T to a position between the dies 54, 66 the handles 10, 31 are closed to effect movement of the follower 34 along the cam 29 and straightening of the toggle mechanism to close the dies and effect crimping. In the event of the traveller plate 84 failing to return to its initial position after release of the lever 104, the pin 111 engages the edge of the recess 108 under the influence of the die force to return it to its initial position before the pin is free to allow closure of the dies. The pin 111 also serves to prevent accidental rotation of the lever 104 after the dies have begun to move together by engaging the projection 110. Specifications 661,192, 896,930 and 918,577 are referred to.
