Abstract
946,346. Vegetable extracts; tea; coffee. AFICO S.A. June 21, 1961 [June 22, 1960; May 12, 1961], No. 22463/61. Heading A2B. In extracting vegetable material containing volatile aromatics, e.g. Coffee, Tea, Chicory, matÚ, hip, lime blossom, peppermint, the material is finely ground and slurried with preferably cation and for anion free and also oxygen free water and the slurry is continuously extracted at elevated temperature, preferably under oxygen excluding conditions. Simultaneously with the extraction at least part of the volatile aromatics content is stripped by means of steam and/or inert gas, or alternatively, by evaporation of part of the extraction water, fractionationed if desired, and condensed, at least part of the condensate being added to the liquid extract from which solids have been removed, e.g. by centrifugation, and which has been concentrated by evaporation; the resultant liquid mixture is then spray or vacuum dried to a powder. Spent solids may be re-extracted and the liquid extract used to slurry fresh material. The process may be effected at reduced, normal or increased pressure depending on whether the extraction temperature is below, at or above 100‹C. Preferably however in extracting tea the temperature is from 75 to 100‹C. and the duration of extraction and stripping not more than 4 minutes, suitably ¢ to 1 minute; the weight ratio of extract to fresh tea material being conveniently 8 to 16: R 1 and the aromatic distillate 10 to 40% by weight of the fresh tea material after fractionation and 20 to 100% beforehand. The extraction may be carried out in a single pan or climbing or falling film evaporator. Preferably the heated slurry is poured down a tube 1 from an inlet 4 to an outlet 7 flowing down over plates 2 cleared by scrapers 9 on a rotated shaft 8, whilst upwardly rising stripping gas or vapour admitted through a bottom opening 6 passes up to the tube to escape through a top opening 5.
