Abstract

946,104. Control of D.C. motors; controllers. LANSING BAGNALL Ltd. April 12, 1961 [April 21, 1960], No. 14056/60. Headings H2B and H2J. The driving motor 114 of a fork-lift truck has two series field windings F1, F2 which may be arranged in series or parallel with each other by electromagnetic contactors C7, C8 and is powered by two battery sections 71, 72 which also may be connected in series or parallel by further contactors C5, C6. Two series resistors R1, R2 are short circuited in turn by contactors C3, C4 during acceleration. R2 is also used for rheostatic braking, during which an additional field winding F3 is connected across the battery sections in parallel; the connection is made through contacts AC1 and AC2, one of which opens when its corresponding contactor C1 or C2 closes to energize the motor in the direction determined by a reversing switch 87. The contactors have operating coils S1 ... S9 energized through microswitches MS1 ... MS6 in a pedal operated master controller, the sequence being (i) (pedal released), rheostatic braking established, batteries in parallel; (ii) motor connected to battery with its field windings F1, F2 in series; (iii) R1 short circuited; (iv) R2 short-circuited; (v) battery sections rearranged in series and R2 re-inserted; (vi) R2 again short-circuited; (vii) F1, F2 rearranged in parallel. A torque sensitive switch 89, operated by movement of the motor body against resilient mounts changes the field connections back to series automatically when a given torque is exceeded. An hydraulic pump motor 82, controlled by switch 84, provided power for the fork lifting apparatus but at step (v) and above its circuit is broken by MS4. A warning lamp 86 is illuminated when key switch 19 is turned on and extinguished when the pedal is depressed. The control circuits are energized through a thermal overload trip 182. The pedal operated controller (Fig. 4) comprises six microswitches 31 closed successively by a cam 32 linked with an adjustable, quickreturn, dash-pot 37. A lost motion link (Fig. 2, not shown) connects the cam arm spindle 45 with the pedal (not shown).
