In a combined gear-box and pinion stand for a rolling mill, the bearings of the gears are supported by bearing blocks 23, 36, 37, 42, 43, 44 which are mounted on a base structure 12 and the bearing blocks are prestressed by bolts 26, 47, 51 which pass through them and are secured to the base structure 12 in order to resist the effect of couples which may be generated during normal operation of the gearbox. The base structure 12 is constructed from rolledsections and has welded to its upper surface pads 25, 38A, 38B, 38C having accurately machined flat upper surfaces on which the bearing blocks are mounted.
