A negative holder for photographic printing apparatus comprises a support having a substantially horizontal top formed with an opening therein through which printing light may pass, a mask carried by said top and having an oblong opening corresponding with the portion of the negative to be printed and registering with the opening in said support, holding means for holding the negative in said mask in either of two positions with reference to the opening therein, a frame overlying said support and having an opening therein registering with the opening in said top, an upright carried by the support disposed outwardly of the opening in the top, and having a clear path from front to back and from side to side over which the negative or a series of such negatives in strip form may be moved longitudinally past said mask, pivot means between said frame and upright supporting said frame for swing- ing movement toward and from the top of said support and clamping means carried by said frame and engageable with the negative or negative strip to hold the same in printing position. As shown (Fig. 5) the support having a substantially horizontal top comprises an insert 74 in the table top 30 of a printing apparatus (described in Specification 945, 593), under which insert is carried a lamp 70, a heat filter 91, and a neutral density wedge 92, and in an aperture 945 which insert is carried a diffusing plate 93. A mask 98 is supported on the insert 74, is surrounded by a frame 96 screwed to the insert, and carries a resilient clamp 120 and a number of stops 123 (Figs. 4 and 6) for guiding the film strip 100 over the said mask. Above this mask, a U-shaped frame 124 is pivoted by means of a shaft 104 fixed therein and a bearing 105 in an upright 129 secured to the frame 96. This frame 124 has recesses 158 formed therein for receiving an apertured clamp plate 101, is provided with spring pressed balls 159 for resiliently holding the plate 101 in position and is connected by means of a lever 108, link 111, and other linkage (described in detail in the Specification) to a knee operated lever, for raising and lowering thereof. The frame 124 is continuously urged by a spring acting on link 111 into its film clamping position, but, except when an exposure is about to be made, is held a short distance away from this position by electromagnetically controlled abutment means acting on the link 111. By this means, provision is made for final adjustment of the negative position before exposure.
