Abstract

945,414. Repairing submarine cables. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 19, 1962 [July 21, 1961], No. 26524/61. Heading H2C. A submarine cable is severed by raising it with a grapnel until it is clear of the water and then lowering down to the grapnel, using the grapnel line as a guide, a carrier that includes a cable cutter. This cable cutter may comprise explosive fired by an electric conductor or an electromotor driven cutter may be used. A more detailed method is described in which the approximate position at which the cable is to be cut is marked by a buoy, the cable is hooked by retaining grapnels each side of the buoy which are buoyed off when the cable is found, the cable is hooked between these grapnels at the marker buoy position and is cut as above. The Figure shows a frame for carrying the explosive charges. It is made in two parts which are bolted together so as to be guided by the tow line passing through a tube 4. Eyebolts 49 are provided for the lowering cables. The four bottom bars two of which, 43, are shown of the frame cause it to sit astride the cable to be cut and the explosive charges are attached to one or more of side plates 36.
